Materials of Optical Fiber Cables

Optical fiber cables are primarily made of ultra-pure silica glass for the core and cladding, with protective coatings, buffer layers, strength members, and outer jackets made from various plastics and metals.

Core and Cladding

The core is the central part of the fiber that transmits light signals and is typically made from ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), sometimes doped with germanium or phosphorus to increase the refractive index for efficient light guidance. Surrounding the core is the cladding, also made of silica but doped with fluorine or boron to slightly lower its refractive index, ensuring total internal reflection and minimal signal loss.

Coatings and Buffers

To protect the delicate glass fiber, a dual-layer UV-cured acrylate coating is applied: a soft primary layer cushions the fiber, while a hard secondary layer provides mechanical protection. Around the coated fiber, a buffer layer made of acrylate or polyimide shields the fiber from physical damage and environmental factors.

Strength Members

Fiber optic cables include strength members to prevent stretching and mechanical failure. Common materials include aramid yarn (e.g., Kevlar), fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) rods, or steel wires for armored cables. These components provide tensile strength and durability, especially in outdoor or aerial installations.

Outer Jackets

The outer jacket protects the cable from moisture, UV exposure, chemicals, and abrasion. Typical materials include high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) compounds, or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) depending on the application. Some cables may also include metallic armoring for additional protection in harsh environments.

Additional Materials

Other materials may be used depending on the cable type and application, such as water-blocking gels or powders, ribbon matrix resins for ribbon cables, and color inks for fiber identification. Submarine or direct-burial cables may include copper tubes or specialized chemical repellents to enhance durability and prevent water ingress. In summary, the main materials of optical fiber cables include silica glass for the core and cladding, acrylate or polyimide coatings, buffer layers, aramid or steel strength members, and protective outer jackets, with additional specialized materials added for environmental protection and identification.
