Three-level distribution box for connecting electrical equipment

In a three-level distribution system, electrical equipment must be installed hierarchically, with each level controlling and protecting the downstream circuits according to the “one machine, one switch” principle.

Overview of Three-

Level Distribution

A three-level distribution system consists of: First-Level Distribution Box (Main Distribution Box): Installed near the power source, it receives incoming electrical energy and distributes it to second-level boxes. Typical equipment includes the main circuit breaker, main leakage protector, voltmeter, and ammeter. This level centralizes control and monitoring of the entire site's power supply.

Second-

Level Distribution Box: Located near power consumption areas or large equipment, it receives power from the first-level box and distributes it to third-level boxes. It typically contains branch circuit breakers and branch leakage protectors to manage and protect individual circuits.

Third-

Level Distribution Box (Switch Box): Positioned close to the electrical equipment it serves, it directly controls and protects the equipment. Each switch box should control only one piece of equipment or a group of similar equipment, following the “one machine, one switch” principle.

Installation Principles

Hierarchical Connection: Electrical equipment must not bypass any distribution level. Main or secondary boxes should never be directly connected to equipment, as this violates the hierarchical and branch circuit principle. Separate Power and Lighting Circuits: Power and lighting circuits should be distributed separately.

If combined in the same board, they must have separate branch circuits and switch boxes. Minimize Distribution Distances: Main distribution box should be near the power source. Distance from a distribution board to a switch box should not exceed 30 meters.

Distance from a switch box to its controlled equipment should ideally be under 3 meters. Equipment in Each Box: First-Level: Main circuit breaker, main leakage protector, voltmeter, ammeter.

Second-

Level: Branch circuit breakers, branch leakage protectors.

Third-

Level: Isolation switches, circuit breakers, leakage protectors for direct equipment control. Safety and Environmental Considerations: Ensure operational, protective, and maintenance environments meet safety standards. Boxes should be installed in accessible, dry, and ventilated areas.

Wiring Considerations for Three-

Phase Systems

For three-phase DB boxes, each phase carries AC with a 120° phase shift. Proper wiring includes: Main switch for overall control. Individual circuit breakers for each phase to protect circuits from overloads or short circuits.

Neutral wire connected to earth for fault protection. Balanced load distribution across phases to improve efficiency and reduce power losses.

Compliance and Permits

Installation must comply with local electrical codes, such as the New York City Electrical Code and utility specifications (e.g., Con Edison), including permits, inspections, and adherence to safety regulations. Licensed electricians should perform all work to ensure code compliance and operational safety. By following these hierarchical, safety, and wiring principles, a three-level distribution system ensures reliable, efficient, and safe power delivery to all electrical equipment.
