Fiber Bragg Grating Fabrication Process

Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are fabricated by creating a periodic modulation of the refractive index in the fiber core using UV lasers, femtosecond lasers, or direct-write techniques. Traditional UV-Based MethodsThe earliest FBGs were fabricated using UV laser exposure along the fiber core, which induces a periodic refractive index change in photosensitive fibers, often doped with germanium. A widely used approach is the phase mask technique, where a UV laser passes through a phase mask to create an interference pattern that inscribes the grating in the fiber.

This method may require hydrogen loading to enhance photosensitivity, followed by UV exposure, outgassing, and recoating to restore mechanical strength. Transverse holographic inscription, introduced in 1989, allows side illumination of the fiber to create more flexible grating structures.

Femtosecond Laser Direct-

Write Methods

Modern fabrication increasingly uses femtosecond laser inscription (FLI), which enables high-resolution, hydrogen-free, and thermally stable gratings. Two main strategies are employed: Grating array inscription: The femtosecond laser writes parallel grating lines directly into the fiber core, forming a uniform refractive index modulation. Plane-by-plane inscription: A diaphragm in the optical path controls the length of each refractive index modulation line, and scanning the laser inscribes a uniform plane in a single pass.

These methods can produce high-reflectivity FBGs with reflectivity above 97% and are suitable for large-core multicore fibers. Femtosecond laser techniques also allow complex and chirped gratings without requiring photosensitive fibers.

Direct-

Write and Automated TechniquesDirect-write methods use precision laser systems to inscribe gratings in standard fibers without phase masks. These setups leverage high-precision positioning stages and laser spot sizes below one micron, enabling small-batch or laboratory-scale fabrication. Recent advances integrate AI-powered systems to automate femtosecond laser inscription, maintaining precise alignment and consistent grating quality while reducing manual intervention.

SummaryFBG fabrication methods can be categorized as: UV-based phase mask or holographic techniques – require photosensitive fibers and often hydrogen loading. Femtosecond laser direct-write – allows high-resolution, hydrogen-free, and thermally stable gratings, suitable for complex or multicore fibers. Automated AI-assisted laser inscription – enhances throughput, precision, and reproducibility for scalable production.

Each method offers trade-offs in terms of precision, complexity, fiber type compatibility, and scalability, making the choice dependent on the intended application, such as telecommunications, sensing, or laser feedback systems.
