Fiber Optic Disc Coupler

A fiber optic disc coupler distributes or combines optical signals between two or more fibers, enabling signal splitting, merging, or routing in fiber optic networks.

Core Function

A fiber optic disc coupler, also known as a fiber optic splitter or coupler, is designed to transfer light from one or multiple input fibers to one or more output fibers. It can either split a single optical signal into multiple outputs or combine signals from multiple fibers into a single fiber. This makes it essential for managing the flow of light in fiber optic systems, such as telecommunications, data centers, and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks.

How It Works

The coupler operates based on evanescent wave coupling, where the cores of two or more fibers are brought close together, allowing light to transfer between them. In fused biconical taper (FBT) couplers, fibers are heated and fused, creating a tapered region where light can split or combine. Planar lightwave circuit (PLC) couplers use an optical splitter chip to evenly distribute light across multiple outputs.

The splitting ratio can be controlled by adjusting the fusion length or the design of the optical chip.

Key Applications

Signal Distribution: Splitting a single input signal to multiple outputs for network branching. Signal Combining: Merging signals from multiple fibers into one for amplification or processing. Fiber Lasers and Amplifiers: Couplers extract a portion of light from a resonator or combine pump and signal inputs.

Wavelength Multiplexing: WDM couplers combine or separate signals of different wavelengths for efficient data transmission.

Additional Considerations

Fiber optic couplers are directional, meaning light entering the input port generally does not return to the same port. The power distribution among outputs depends on wavelength, polarization, and the coupler design. While couplers introduce some signal loss, they are crucial for flexible and scalable fiber optic network architectures.
