ROGER FIBREOPTICAL NETWORK DOSSIERS Build a Fiber Brief

Standard 4-core outdoor optical cable

A four-core outdoor optical cable typically contains four optical fibers, a protective outer jacket, strength members, and is designed for durability in outdoor environments.

Core Structure

A four-core optical cable contains four individual optical fibers within a single protective jacket. Each fiber can transmit data independently, supporting either two duplex links or one duplex link with two backup fibers for redundancy. The fibers are usually made of pure silica or germanium-doped silica, with a UV-curable acrylate coating for primary protection.

Fiber TypesSingle-mode (OS2/G. 657A2): Suitable for long-distance outdoor transmission, offering low attenuation and bend insensitivity. Multimode (OM3/OM4): Used for shorter distances, typically within buildings or campus networks.

Strength Members

Steel wire: Provides tensile strength for outdoor installation and long cable pulls. Aramid yarn/Kevlar: Often used in indoor/outdoor hybrid cables to prevent stretching.

Protective Layers

Buffer tubes: Loose tube (gel-filled) or tight buffer to protect fibers from mechanical stress. Outer jacket: Polyethylene (PE) for UV resistance and waterproofing in outdoor environments, or LSZH for indoor safety. Water-blocking: Gel or tape to prevent moisture ingress.

Environmental and Mechanical SpecificationsUV resistance: Ensures durability under sunlight exposure. Temperature range: Typically designed to operate in extreme outdoor temperatures. Bend-insensitive: Reduces signal loss in tight bends, critical for FTTx deployments.

Fire protection: Compliance with IEC standards for low smoke/zero halogen and EuroClass ratings for fire safety.

Color Coding

According to TIA-598-C standard, the first four fibers are typically colored Blue, Orange, Green, and Brown, which is important for splicing and termination. ApplicationsFTTx networks: Outdoor drop cables for fiber-to-the-home or business. Long-distance outdoor transmission: Backbone connections between buildings or network nodes.

Redundant links: Ensures network reliability with backup fibers. This combination of fiber type, strength members, protective coatings, and environmental resistance makes four-core outdoor optical cables versatile and reliable for modern network infrastructure.
