Eye Diagram Test Parameters for Optical Modules

Key parameters in an optical module eye diagram include eye height, eye width, jitter, extinction ratio, rise time, fall time, and crossing ratio, which collectively assess signal quality and noise tolerance.

Key Parameters

Eye Height: The vertical opening of the eye diagram, representing the voltage or optical power margin between logic “1” and logic “0”. A larger eye height indicates better noise tolerance and clearer distinction between logic levels, reducing bit errors. Eye Width: The horizontal opening of the eye, measured at the crossing points of the eye.

It reflects timing margin and the effect of jitter; a wider eye width indicates better timing stability. Jitter: The horizontal deviation of signal transitions from their ideal positions. Jitter can be deterministic (caused by reflections or crosstalk) or random, and it directly affects bit error rate.

Smaller jitter corresponds to higher signal quality. Extinction Ratio: The ratio of the optical power of the “1” level to the “0” level. A higher extinction ratio improves logic discrimination at the receiver and reduces susceptibility to interference.

Rise Time and Fall Time: The time it takes for the signal to transition from 10% to 90% of its amplitude (rise) or from 90% to 10% (fall). Faster transitions indicate better bandwidth and less intersymbol interference. Crossing Ratio: The point where the rising and falling edges of the eye cross, ideally at 50% of the amplitude.

Deviations indicate asymmetry in the signal and can affect timing accuracy. Eye Amplitude: The difference between the mean values of logic “1” and logic “0” levels, providing another measure of signal strength. Bit Period / Data Rate: The horizontal spacing between bit intervals, which can be inferred from the eye width and is essential for evaluating timing margins.

Additional Considerations

Eye Mask Testing: Eye diagrams are often compared against a predefined mask to determine if the signal meets system specifications. Intersymbol Interference (ISI): Eye diagrams reveal ISI effects, which appear as eye closure or distortion, helping diagnose channel impairments.

PA

M Formats: For multi-level signals like PAM4, additional parameters such as two-level or four-level eye heights are measured to assess signal integrity. By analyzing these parameters, engineers can evaluate the overall quality of optical signals, identify sources of degradation, and ensure reliable high-speed data transmission.
