How to get the fiber optic cable through the well

Fiber optic cables can be safely routed through a well by using a properly sized conduit, careful cable handling, and adherence to pulling and protection standards.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation, assess the well's dimensions, depth, and environmental conditions. Determine the type of fiber optic cable (single-mode or multi-mode) and whether it is armored or standard loose-tube, as this affects handling and protection requirements. Ensure the cable length is sufficient for the entire run, including extra slack for bends and future maintenance.

Conduit Selection

Use a PVC or HDPE conduit sized to accommodate the cable and any innerducts or pulling tapes. The conduit protects the fiber from moisture, abrasion, and mechanical stress. For vertical wells, consider a smooth inner surface to reduce friction during cable pulling.

If multiple cables are planned, install extra conduits to avoid future excavation.

Cable Handling

Inspect the cable for damage before installation and test it if possible. Seal cable ends with pre-formed or heat-shrinkable end caps to prevent moisture ingress. Use gloves and safety boots when handling heavy reels.

Avoid sharp bends; maintain the minimum bend radius specified by the manufacturer.

Pulling the Cable

Attach a pulling tape or rope to the cable end and feed it through the conduit from the top of the well. Use a winch or manual puller to guide the cable slowly, avoiding excessive tension that could damage the fibers. For deep wells, consider intermediate support or rollers to reduce friction and prevent kinking.

If the well has bends, lubricants approved for fiber optic cables can be applied to reduce pulling resistance.

Securing and Testing

Once the cable is in place, secure it at the top and bottom of the well to prevent movement. Test the fiber for continuity and signal loss before finalizing the installation. If the well is exposed to water, ensure proper sealing and drainage to protect the cable over time.

By following these steps—careful planning, using a protective conduit, proper handling, controlled pulling, and post-installation testing—you can safely pass fiber optic cables through a well while maintaining long-term performance and reliability.
