How to install a large optical cable reel

Optical cable reels can be installed using either the moving reel or stationary reel method, with careful handling to prevent damage and maintain cable performance.

Moving Reel Method

The moving reel method is used when vehicles carrying the cable reel can traverse most of the installation route. In this method, the fiber optic cable is raised and lashed to the support strand in a single operation. The reel is continuously rotated as the cable is pulled off, minimizing the need for intermediate handling.

This method is efficient for long, accessible routes and reduces the number of splice points, which helps maintain signal integrity.

Stationary Reel Method

The stationary reel method is applied when vehicles cannot access the majority of the cable route. The cable is pulled into place beneath the strand using cable blocks, and lashing begins at the far end of the route. The lasher is then pulled toward the stationary reel at the near end.

This method is suitable for routes with obstacles, limited access, or complex terrain.

Handling and Safety Precautions

Inspect reels for damage, broken flanges, or nails before installation to prevent cable damage. Maintain the thermal protective covering on stored reels and protect them from vandalism or environmental damage. Use a figure-eight pattern when laying cable on the ground to prevent kinking and mechanical stress.

Avoid sharp bends, excessive pulling tension, and crushing forces, as these can degrade fiber performance.

Follow OSH

A regulations and company safety procedures throughout the installation process. Protect cable on pavements or high-traffic areas with barricades or cones.

Lashing and Placement

Fiber optic cables are typically lashed to a messenger strand or existing cable using specialized lashers. For self-supporting figure-eight cables, the messenger and fiber components are integrated, allowing rapid one-step installation. Ensure the minimum bend radius is maintained during and after installation to prevent long-term signal loss.

By following these methods and precautions, optical cable reels can be installed efficiently while preserving the cable's mechanical and optical integrity.

OPGW Installation Manual

The bending radius of optical cable during laying process should be effectively guaranteed to avoid “gold hooks” and avoid too much tension, abrasion and too many times of twists and turns.

Procedure for Cutting and Respooling Fiber Optic Cable

Select a take-up reel with sufficient drum size to maintain cable minimum bend radius. The drum diameter should be a minimum of 8 inches or 30 times the cable outer diameter.
