The three states of relay protection refer to

The three operating states of a protective relay are the normal (rest) state, the operating (actuated) state, and the reset (return) state. 1. Normal (Rest) StateIn the normal state, the relay is idle and continuously monitors the electrical circuit for abnormal conditions such as overcurrent, overvoltage, or faults.

During this state, the actuating quantity (current or voltage) is below the relay's pickup threshold, and the relay contacts remain open, meaning no action is taken on the circuit breaker. 2. Operating (Actuated) StateThe operating state occurs when the measured electrical quantity exceeds the relay's preset pickup value.

This triggers the relay mechanism to move, eventually closing its contacts and initiating the trip signal to the circuit breaker. The relay's operating time is the duration from the moment the actuating quantity exceeds the pickup level until the contacts close, isolating the faulty section from the healthy system. 3.

Reset (Return) StateAfter the fault is cleared and the actuating quantity falls below the reset threshold, the relay enters the reset state. In this state, the relay contacts return to their original position, and the relay is ready to monitor the system again. The reset ensures that the relay does not remain in the tripped condition unnecessarily and allows the system to resume normal operation.

Additional Notes

The pickup value is the threshold above which the relay starts to operate. The reset value is the level below which the relay returns to its normal state. Proper coordination of these states ensures reliability, selectivity, and speed in power system protection, minimizing damage and maintaining system stability.

These three states form the fundamental operating cycle of all protective relays, whether electromechanical, static, or numerical, and are essential for effective fault detection and isolation in electrical power systems.
