Ghana Replaces Distribution Boxes

Ghana is replacing over 2,000 distribution transformers nationwide to modernize its electricity network and improve power reliability. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), under the oversight of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, has launched a major initiative to replace ageing distribution transformers across the country. This effort targets more than 2,000 transformers, many of which have been in service for over two decades, contributing to inefficiencies, localised outages, and voltage instability.

The programme is part of a broader strategy to modernize the power distribution network, reduce system overloads, and enhance overall electricity supply reliability.

Scope and Implementation

The upgrade includes the replacement of old transformers, expansion of substation capacity, and rehabilitation of overloaded feeders, particularly in high-demand areas such as Accra and Kumasi. Key substations in Accra—including Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa, and Lashibi—are being upgraded to reduce outages and stabilise voltage. Similar reinforcement projects are ongoing in Kumasi and surrounding areas, with new distribution lines and 11KV feeders being constructed to relieve overloaded circuits and improve operational efficiency.

Investment and Funding

The government has allocated significant resources to this initiative. While ECG's 2024 budget exceeded GH¢9 billion, approximately GH¢1. 8 billion has been earmarked for 2025, with a substantial portion directed toward critical infrastructure such as transformers, conductors, and meters.

Emergency procurement of 2,500 transformers has been arranged to boost capacity and ensure timely improvements in supply reliability.

Expected Benefits

The replacement of distribution transformers and network upgrades are expected to: Reduce technical losses and improve voltage stabilityMinimize localised outages and enhance power qualitySupport growing economic activity by ensuring reliable electricityStrengthen fault detection and operational efficiency within ECG Broader ReformsThis initiative aligns with ongoing reforms to address long-standing operational and financial inefficiencies within ECG. Measures include improving procurement processes, reducing waste, and enhancing revenue collection, all aimed at creating a more efficient and accountable electricity distribution system.

Overall, Ghana's transformer replacement and distribution network upgrade represent a historic investment in the country's power infrastructure, aiming to deliver a more reliable, efficient, and modern electricity supply for both residential and commercial consumers.
