Optical to Electrical Modules and Electrical Port Modules

Electrical port modules convert electrical signals over copper cables, while optical modules transmit data as light over fiber, enabling high-speed and long-distance communication.

Electrical Port Modules

Electrical port modules, also called optical-to-electrical port modules, are hot-swappable devices with an SFP form factor that use RJ45 connectors and UTP copper cables for data transmission. They are primarily designed for short-reach applications, typically under 100 meters, and support speeds ranging from 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps depending on the module type: Fast Ethernet modules: Up to 100 Mbps, used with 100BASE-T SFP ports. Gigabit modules: Up to 1 Gbps, compatible with Gigabit SFP ports, supporting multiple operating modes like SGMII-to-10/100/1000BASE-T.

10 Gigabit modules: Up to 10 Gbps, used with 10G SFP ports, requiring careful heat dissipation due to higher power consumption. Electrical port modules are ideal for leveraging existing copper cabling in enterprise networks, connecting server NICs and switches without the need for fiber upgrades.

Optical Modules

Optical modules are hot-pluggable transceivers that convert electrical signals into optical signals for transmission over fiber optic cables, and vice versa. They typically use LC, MPO, or MTP connectors and support a wide range of speeds from 2 Mbps to 100 Gbps, depending on the form factor: SFP modules: Single-channel, supporting up to 25 Gbps. SFP+ modules: Higher speed and density, commonly used for 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

QSF

P modules: Four-channel, supporting up to 100 Gbps by aggregating four channels. Optical modules are suitable for long-distance and high-bandwidth applications, where copper cabling is insufficient. Wavelength is a key parameter in optical modules, unlike electrical modules, which do not rely on wavelength.

Both types are hot-swappable and compatible with SFP or QSFP form factors, but they differ in interface type, transmission medium, distance, and key operational parameters.
