The red light source on the optical power meter is no longer working

The optical power meter may lose power when using red light due to wavelength-specific sensor limitations, calibration issues, or device malfunction.

Wavelength Sensitivity and Sensor Type

Optical power meters rely on photodiode sensors that are sensitive to specific wavelength ranges. Common sensor types include Silicon (Si), Germanium (Ge), and Indium Gallium Arsenide (InGaAs), each optimized for certain wavelengths. If the meter's sensor is not designed for the red light wavelength being used, it may fail to register the signal properly or trigger a protective shutdown to prevent damage.

Red light typically falls around 620–750 nm, which may be outside the optimal range of some OPM sensors. Calibration and Wavelength SettingsOPMs are calibrated for specific wavelengths, and using a wavelength outside the calibration range can cause incorrect readings or operational issues. Ensure that the meter is set to the correct wavelength corresponding to the red light source.

Some meters automatically adjust for wavelength, but others require manual selection. Incorrect settings can sometimes appear as a “power loss” or cause the device to shut down if it detects an overload or out-of-range input.

Device-

Specific Issues

Certain devices, like the Red Light Optical Power Meter, integrate both OTDR and OPM functions and are designed for red light testing. If a standard OPM is used instead of a red-light-compatible model, the meter may not handle the optical power correctly, leading to shutdowns. Other potential causes include low battery, internal circuit protection, or software glitches in the meter.

Troubleshooting Steps

Check wavelength compatibility: Verify that the OPM sensor supports the red light wavelength. Set the correct wavelength: Ensure the meter is configured for the red light source. Inspect power supply: Replace or recharge batteries and check for loose connections.

Test with another wavelength: Confirm if the meter works with other wavelengths to isolate the issue. Consult manufacturer guidance: Some meters have protective shutdowns for high-intensity or incompatible wavelengths. By confirming sensor compatibility, proper wavelength settings, and power supply integrity, most red light-related power loss issues can be resolved.

If the problem persists, the meter may require service or replacement.
