Spectrometers and Optical Power Meters

Optical power meters measure the power of light, while spectrometers analyze the distribution of optical power across wavelengths.

Optical Power Meters

An optical power meter is an instrument used to measure the optical power (energy per unit time) of a light beam, such as a laser or fiber optic signal, typically expressed in watts or dBm (decibels relative to 1 milliwatt) (RP Photonics). It usually consists of a sensor head containing a photodiode or thermal sensor and a display console. Some meters support multi-channel measurements, high-speed logging, and automated control via SCPI commands, making them suitable for production testing and R&D (Keysight).

Power meters are ideal for: Validating signal levels in fiber optic networksCharacterizing optical components like lasers, amplifiers, and transceiversEnsuring system performance and safety in telecom, datacom, and photonics applications Advanced models offer broad wavelength coverage, high dynamic range, and compatibility with multiple sensor types, allowing flexible and repeatable measurements (Thorlabs). Handheld and benchtop versions are available, with some capable of femtowatt-level resolution and high sampling rates for precise measurements (Newport). Optical Spectrum Analyzers (Spectrometers)An optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) measures and displays the optical power distribution over a range of wavelengths, providing detailed spectral information (Yokogawa).

OS

As are essential for: Telecom and photonics researchSpectroscopy and sensing applicationsCharacterizing laser linewidth, wavelength stability, and spectral purity Modern OSAs offer high wavelength resolution, wide dynamic range, and low stray-light interference, enabling precise spectral analysis across multiple applications (Yokogawa). Both instruments are complementary in photonics, fiber optics, and laser research, and selecting the right tool depends on whether the focus is on power measurement or spectral analysis.

Spectrometer

A spectrometer is a scientific instrument used to separate and measure spectral components of a physical phenomenon. Spectrometer is a broad term often used to describe instruments that measure a continuous variable of a phenomenon where the spectral components are somehow mixed. In visible light a spectrometer can separate white light and measure individual narrow bands of color, called a spectrum. A mass spectrometer
