How to connect the jumper cable of the fiber optic transceiver

To connect a fiber optic jumper to a transceiver, remove dust caps, align the connector with the transceiver port, insert gently until it clicks, and ensure TX/RX orientation is correct.

Step-by-

Step Connection

Prepare the SFP Transceiver and Jumper CableEnsure the SFP module is fully inserted into the network device port until it clicks. Verify compatibility between the transceiver and the fiber type (single-mode or multi-mode) and connector type (LC, SC, ST, or FC). Remove protective dust caps from both the SFP port and the fiber jumper connectors.

Clean the Fiber End Faces

Use a fiber cleaning tool or lint-free wipes to remove dust or debris from the connector end face to prevent signal loss or damage.

Align and Insert the Connector

Align the fiber jumper connector with the transceiver port. Insert the connector gently until it locks into place.

For L

C connectors, you should hear a click indicating a secure connection. Avoid twisting or forcing the fiber, as this can damage the connector or fiber core. Check TX/RX OrientationEnsure the TX (transmit) side of one device connects to the RX (receive) side of the opposite device to establish a proper optical link.

Cable Management

Route the fiber jumper through cable trays or slots, coil any excess fiber naturally without tight bends, and secure with fiber ties or bundling tape. Maintain the minimum bend radius to prevent signal degradation.

Verify the Connection

Test the link using network testing tools such as a visual fault locator or Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) to ensure signal integrity and performance. Connector Types and UsageLC Connector: Commonly used for SFP modules; features a latch mechanism for easy insertion.

S

C Connector: Rectangular shell, often used with GBIC modules; plug in and latch without rotation.

S

T Connector: Round shell, secured with a screw; typically used in ODF or 10Base-F networks.

F

C Connector: Uses a metal sleeve with screw fastener; mainly for ODF connections. Following these steps ensures a secure, reliable fiber optic connection while minimizing the risk of signal loss or physical damage to the fiber and transceiver.
