Optical Cable Material Density Table

Optical fiber cables are primarily made of silica glass (SiO₂) with coatings and jackets, with densities ranging from 1. 1 g/cm³ for polymer coatings to 2. 2 g/cm³ for the glass core and cladding.

Core and Cladding

The core and cladding of optical fibers are typically made from ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), sometimes doped with germanium to adjust the refractive index for light guidance. The density of pure silica glass is approximately 2. 2 g/cm³.

Germanium doping slightly increases the density depending on the concentration, but it generally remains close to 2. 2 g/cm³.

Coatings

To protect the fragile glass fiber, dual-layer UV-cured acrylate coatings are applied. The primary soft coating cushions the fiber, while the secondary hard coating provides mechanical protection. These polymer coatings have densities around 1.

1–1. 2 g/cm³, significantly lighter than the glass core.

Strength Members

Optical cables often include strength members such as aramid yarns (Kevlar), fiberglass rods, or steel wires to provide tensile strength. Their densities vary: aramid yarns are about 1. 44 g/cm³, fiberglass rods around 2.

5 g/cm³, and steel wires approximately 7. 8 g/cm³.

Outer Jacket

The outer jacket protects the cable from environmental factors like UV, moisture, and mechanical stress. Common materials include polyethylene (PE), low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) compounds, or polyurethane, with densities ranging from 0. 9 g/cm³ (PE) to 1.

5 g/cm³ (LSZH).

Summary

The overall density of an optical cable depends on the proportion of glass, polymer coatings, strength members, and jacket materials. Typical fiber-only density is dominated by the glass core (~2. 2 g/cm³), while the complete cable assembly has an effective density ranging roughly 1.

2–2. 0 g/cm³, depending on the design and materials used. This affects cable weight, installation tension, and mechanical handling.
