Armored Vibration Optical Cable Model

The armored vibration optical cable model is a three-core submarine optical fiber composite cable designed to withstand vortex-induced vibrations, with its mechanical response analyzed using finite element simulations and monitored via distributed optical fiber sensing.

Cable Structure and Design

The model typically refers to a 35 kV three-core XLPE-insulated optical fiber composite submarine cable (HYJYF41-F), which includes an armored layer to protect against mechanical stress and environmental hazards such as scouring and suspension on the seabed. The cable is designed to maintain structural integrity under vortex-induced vibration (VIV), which occurs when ocean currents generate alternating lift and drag forces on suspended spans of the cable.

Vibration Analysis

Finite element simulations are used to study the cable's response to VIV. The process involves: Modal analysis to determine the natural frequencies of the cable. Fluid–structure interaction simulations using software like ANSYS to model the coupling between ocean currents and cable vibrations.

Stress distribution analysis of the torsional optical fibers, identifying maximum stress locations and resonance conditions. The simulations reveal phenomena such as beating vibrations and resonance locking, where transverse vibration amplitudes increase significantly under certain flow velocities. Stress changes in the optical fibers correspond to the frequency of vortex shedding, allowing engineers to predict and mitigate VIV effects.

Monitoring and Sensing

Distributed optical fiber sensing technology is integrated into the cable to provide: Real-time monitoring over long distances. High-precision detection of stress and vibration.

Identification of VI

V occurrence and amplitude through stress frequency analysis. This technology ensures operational safety by detecting fatigue or excessive stress in the armored cable before failure occurs.

Practical Applications

The armored vibration optical cable model is primarily used in: Submarine power transmission, especially for offshore wind farms. Long-span sea-crossing bridges or underwater communication lines. Environments where vortex-induced vibrations and mechanical fatigue are significant concerns.

By combining mechanical reinforcement, advanced simulation, and distributed sensing, this cable model provides a robust solution for high-stress marine and offshore applications.
