Coherent Optical Receiver

A coherent optical receiver detects both amplitude and phase of optical signals, enabling high-speed, high-capacity optical communication with advanced modulation formats.

Overview

A coherent optical receiver is a device used in optical communication systems to detect the full information of an optical signal, including both its amplitude and phase. Unlike direct-detection receivers, coherent receivers can handle complex modulation formats such as m-PAM, m-QAM, and 4D signals, and support dual-polarization transmission, which significantly increases data throughput and spectral efficiency.

Key Components and Functionality

Local Oscillator (LO): Provides a reference optical signal for mixing with the incoming data signal. Optical Hybrid: Combines the incoming signal with the LO to extract in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) components. Photodetectors: Convert optical signals into electrical signals, often using high-speed photodiodes capable of operating up to 100 GHz.

Trans-impedance Amplifier (TIA): Amplifies the electrical signal; low-bandwidth versions may include linear TIAs, while high-bandwidth versions often use optical pre-amplification.

Analog-to-

Digital Converters (ADC) and DSP: Digitize the electrical signals and perform digital signal processing to compensate for impairments such as chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion, and phase noise.

Applications

Coherent optical receivers are widely used in: Long-haul and ultra-high-speed optical networks for multi-terabit transmission. Test and measurement systems for evaluating optical components and waveforms. Radio-over-fiber and microwave photonics applications requiring high linearity and bandwidth.

High-resolution optical spectrum analysis and research in photonic networks.

Advantages

High sensitivity and selectivity: Coherent detection improves signal-to-noise ratio and allows detection of weak signals. Support for advanced modulation formats: Enables higher data rates without increasing bandwidth. Polarization diversity: Simultaneous detection of both polarizations increases channel capacity.

Digital compensation: DSP allows adaptive correction of transmission impairments, making coherent receivers robust against fiber nonlinearities and phase noise.

Technical Specifications

Operating wavelength: Typically C-band (1530–1570 nm), with options for S- to U-band. Bandwidth: Versions available from 40 GHz to over 110 GHz. Responsivity: Average responsivity ranges from 40 to 60 mA/W depending on the model.

Form factor: Compact 19" chassis with optical inputs for both LO and data signals. Coherent optical receivers are essential for modern high-capacity optical networks, enabling efficient, reliable, and flexible data transmission across long distances while supporting advanced modulation and polarization techniques.
