Cable tray size and weight standards

Standard cable trays come in widths from 50 mm to 1000 mm, depths from 25 mm to 203 mm, and lengths of 3 m or 6 m, with weight capacity depending on material, thickness, and tray type.

Standard Dimensions

Widths: Cable trays are available in a wide range of nominal widths to accommodate different cable volumes. Common standard widths include 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 225, 300, 400, 450, 500, 600, 750, 900, and 1000 mm per IEC 61537, while in the US, NEMA VE 1 specifies 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 inches. Depths: Standard tray depths (side rail height) range from 25 mm to 203 mm, depending on the tray type and cable load requirements.

Typical depths include 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 mm in IEC practice, and 3, 4, 5, 6 inches in NEMA/NEC practice. Lengths: Straight sections are commonly 3 m or 6 m, with longer spans of 9. 1 m and 12.

2 m available for special applications. Material Thickness: Tray thickness varies by material and load rating. Aluminum trays often use 6063-T5 alloy with minimum tensile strength of 30,000 psi, while steel trays may have thicker gauge for higher load capacity.

Tray Types and Weight Considerations

Ladder Tray: Most common, with rungs supporting cables. Width and depth determine cable volume, but load rating is independent of width; a 900 mm wide tray does not carry more weight than a 150 mm tray if the rung spacing and material are the same.

Perforated and Solid-

Bottom Trays: Provide additional support or protection. Weight capacity depends on material, thickness, and span between supports. Aluminum trays are lighter but may require closer support spacing for heavy cables.

Load Ratings: Cable tray weight capacity is influenced by: Material type (aluminum, steel, stainless steel)Tray thickness and constructionSpan between supportsCable type and total weight Example: Aluminum ladder trays with 66 mm, 90 mm, 128 mm, 137 mm, and 175 mm depths are rated according to CSA C22. 2 No. 126 M-91 and UL standards.

Practical Considerations

Ensure trays are sized for 50–60% initial fill to allow future cable additions. Proper sizing prevents overheating, overcrowding, and structural failure. Material choice and thickness directly affect weight capacity and heat dissipation.

By selecting the correct width, depth, and material, engineers can ensure safe, code-compliant, and expandable cable management systems.
