Optical Cable Fitting Material Selection

Optical cable fittings are primarily made from ultra-pure silica, polymer coatings, aramid yarn, steel, and protective polymer jackets to ensure signal integrity, mechanical strength, and environmental protection.

Core and Cladding

The core of an optical fiber, responsible for transmitting light signals, is typically made of ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), often doped with germanium, phosphorus, or fluorine to control the refractive index and optimize signal transmission. Surrounding the core is the cladding, made from silica or plastic with a slightly lower refractive index, which reflects light back into the core to prevent signal loss.

Coatings and Protective Layers

Optical fibers are coated with dual-layer UV-cured acrylate: a soft primary coating for flexibility and a hard secondary coating for mechanical protection. Additional protective layers may include ribbon matrices for multi-fiber cables and UV-cured resins to maintain stability during installation and operation.

Strength Members

To prevent stretching and provide tensile strength, optical cables incorporate aramid yarn (Kevlar), fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) rods, or steel wires in armored cables. These materials protect the fiber from mechanical stress, bending, and environmental factors.

Water-

Blocking and Environmental ProtectionCables often include water-blocking gels, tapes, or super-absorbent polymers to prevent moisture ingress, which could degrade signal quality. The outer jackets are made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) polymers, or other UV- and fire-resistant materials to ensure durability in outdoor or industrial environments.

Metallic Components

Some optical cables, especially those used in aerial or grounding applications, include metallic elements such as steel or aluminum for additional mechanical support, grounding, or chemical insulation.

Summary

In essence, optical cable fittings combine high-purity glass for signal transmission, polymer coatings for protection, strength members for mechanical resilience, water-blocking materials for environmental safety, and outer jackets for durability. The careful selection of these materials ensures long-term performance, minimal signal loss, and resistance to environmental stresses.
