Syria Fiber Optic Cable Detection

Syria's fiber optic network is expanding through national and international projects, with monitoring systems in place to detect faults and maintain connectivity.

National Fiber Infrastructure

Syria is actively developing a Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network under the BARQ NET initiative, covering all 14 governorates including Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, and Latakia. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MoCT), regulated by the Syrian Telecommunications & Post Regulatory Authority (SYTPRA), oversees deployment, operation, and maintenance of passive fiber infrastructure. Selected network providers are responsible for civil and active infrastructure, using Tier I global vendors for equipment, and implementing centralized Network Operations Centers (NOCs) with AI-based analytics for proactive fault detection and network monitoring.

International and Regional Connectivity

The Silk

Link project, launched in May 2025, aims to modernize Syria's digital infrastructure and position the country as a regional data transit hub. This 4,500-kilometer fiber-optic network includes submarine cable landing stations and international data centers. The project is a joint venture between Saudi Arabia's stc Group (75% ownership) and the Syrian Sovereign Fund (25%), with a total investment of approximately $800 million.

Silk

Link integrates the Medusa Submarine Cable System and is designed to support high-capacity data transmission, cloud services, IoT applications, and regional connectivity.

Fault Detection and Cable Monitoring

Syria employs network monitoring systems to detect fiber optic cable faults, including severed or damaged lines. For example, in February 2026, a fiber-optic cable linking Damascus and Daraa was severed, disrupting telecommunications and internet services in southern provinces. Maintenance teams were dispatched to identify the fault, repair the cable, and restore connectivity.

Causes of such outages can include adverse weather, mechanical damage, or potential sabotage.

Technical Measures

Fiber optic cables in Syria adhere to ITU-T G. 652/G. 655 standards, ensuring durability against heat, humidity, and mechanical stress.

The BARQ NET FTT

P platform uses VULA-based management software capable of remote monitoring and auto-configuration of customer-premises equipment, while SilkLink provides high-capacity, resilient international transit. Both initiatives include cybersecurity protocols to defend against DDoS attacks and cable-level threats, ensuring reliable detection and rapid response to network faults. SummarySyria's fiber optic infrastructure combines national FTTP deployment and international submarine cable integration to enhance connectivity.

Fault detection relies on centralized NOCs, AI analytics, and rapid maintenance response, ensuring that both domestic and international data services remain operational despite occasional disruptions. These projects collectively aim to improve internet quality, support cloud and IoT services, and establish Syria as a regional digital hub.
