How to coil optical fiber cable strands

Properly coiling optical fiber strands involves careful handling to avoid sharp bends, maintain signal integrity, and ensure a neat, maintainable layout.

Key Principles

Avoid Sharp Bends: Optical fibers are fragile and can suffer signal loss or breakage if bent too sharply. Always respect the minimum bend radius specified for the fiber type. Neat and Tidy Layout: Coiling should prevent tangling or “bird's-nest” formations, making future maintenance easier.

Reserve Adequate Length: Before coiling, calculate the required slack for splicing and future adjustments. Uneven lengths can make the coil messy and reduce reliability. Coiling MethodsMiddle-First Method: Place the heat-shrink sleeves in the splice tray's fixing groove first, then coil the remaining fiber on both sides.

This protects the fiber joints and is ideal for small splice tray spaces.

End-

Start Method: Begin coiling from one end, fix the heat-shrink tube, and then coil the remaining fiber on the other side. This method is flexible and avoids sharp bends. Special Situations: For fibers that are unusually long or short, coil them separately at the end or around special optical devices.

Handling Tips

Pull by the Strength Member: When handling patch cords, always pull by the connector crimped to the strength member, not the fiber itself, to prevent damage. Secure Coils Properly: In mid-span storage or manholes, secure the coil to a solid structure to prevent movement and stress on the fiber. Avoid Floor Tossing: Never throw fiber coils onto surfaces; this can break the core and cause signal loss.

Applications

Splice Trays and Enclosures: Coiling ensures fibers are organized, protected, and easy to maintain.

Fiber-

Optic Devices: For specialized applications like gyroscopes or sensors, precise winding patterns are used to maintain performance and minimize environmental effects. By following these principles and methods, optical fiber strands can be coiled safely, maintaining both performance and longevity while facilitating future maintenance and adjustments.

Methods Of Coiling Optical Fiber After Splicing

The rule is to coil the fiber once after each splicing and heat shrinking of one or several optical fibers in fiber optic sleeve or optical fibers in a branch direction optical cable.

Step 3: Begin the coil by standing outside the cable, gripping it with both hands and rotating the end once in a clock wise manner (Figure 3). Clockwise twist (left arm over right arm)

Duct Installation of Fiber Optic Cable

Fiber optic cable should not be coiled in a continuous direction except for lengths of 100 ft (30 m) or less. The preferred size for the figure-eight coil is about 15 ft (4.5 m) in length, with each loop 5 ft (1.5 m)
