Distribution of optical fiber ducts in Kenya

Kenya's optical fiber ducts are distributed nationwide through a combination of underground and overhead installations, with major expansion projects aiming to achieve near-universal coverage.

National Fiber Expansion

Kenya is implementing a Digital Superhighway plan to expand fiber coverage from 62% to 90% by the end of the next financial year, targeting 100,000 km of fiber optic cables across the country. This expansion focuses on connecting underserved and high-risk areas, leveraging both government and private sector infrastructure, including Kenya Power's existing network. The project faces logistical, financial, and security challenges, particularly in remote regions like Northern Kenya, where terrain and high-risk conditions complicate deployment.

Deployment Methods

Underground Ducts: Fiber ducts are installed underground following strict ICT Authority standards, including trenching, concrete mixture specifications, and duct technical requirements. Access chambers are used to facilitate maintenance, pulling, and splicing of fiber cables. Underground ducts are preferred in urban areas for protection against environmental hazards and vandalism.

Overhead Fiber: Overhead deployment uses ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) cables, which are lightweight, non-metallic, and resistant to electrical interference. Overhead fiber is commonly installed along existing utility poles, including electricity transmission lines managed by KETRACO, which also leases excess fiber to licensed operators. Overhead installations offer higher reliability and security compared to underground ducts, which are prone to theft or accidental damage.

Key Operators and InfrastructureKETRACO integrates fiber with electricity transmission lines, providing nationwide connectivity and regional links. Private operators, including Safaricom and other ISPs, participate in both underground and aerial fiber deployment, often collaborating with government projects to expand coverage. Fiber management is centralized through Optical Distribution Frames (ODFs) and fiber closures to protect spliced fibers and ensure network reliability.

Standards and Compliance

The IC

T Authority sets national standards for fiber duct installation, including physical and technical requirements, trenching, and material specifications. Compliance is monitored through audits in ministries, counties, agencies, and private entities to ensure adherence to standards. SummaryKenya's optical fiber ducts are distributed through a hybrid network of underground and overhead installations, guided by national standards and strategic expansion projects.

The combination of government-led initiatives and private sector participation aims to provide ubiquitous, secure, and reliable fiber connectivity across urban and rural areas, supporting the country's digital infrastructure goals.
