The role of reflection intensity type fiber optic sensors

A reflective intensity-type fiber optic sensor detects changes in light intensity reflected from a target, converting it into an electrical signal for precise measurement in harsh or confined environments.

Working Principle

Reflective intensity-type fiber optic sensors operate by emitting light from an LED or other light source through an optical fiber, which travels to the sensing point. When the light strikes a target, a portion is reflected back into the fiber. The reflected light intensity depends on the target's distance, surface texture, color, and material.

A photodetector at the sensor unit converts this reflected light into an electrical signal, which is then processed to determine the measured parameter, such as displacement or pressure.

Sensor Structure

Typical configurations include: Optical fibers: Glass or plastic fibers guide light to and from the target. Emitter and receiver: Either the same fiber or separate fibers carry emitted and reflected light. Signal processing electronics: Amplify and convert the optical signal into a usable electrical output.

MEM

S integration: Advanced designs use microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) with spherical fiber ends and sensitive diaphragms to enhance sensitivity and dynamic response. For example, a MEMS-based reflective intensity-modulated fiber-optic sensor for pressure measurement uses two multimode fibers with spherical ends, a silicon diaphragm, and a high borosilicate glass substrate, achieving high sensitivity (~0. 139 mV/kPa) and fast response in high-frequency environments.

Advantages

Reflective intensity-type fiber optic sensors offer several benefits over traditional sensors: Non-contact measurement: Reduces wear and allows detection of delicate or moving objects. High sensitivity and fast response: Light-based detection enables rapid measurement of small displacements or pressure changes. Resistance to harsh environments: Immune to electromagnetic interference, corrosion, and extreme temperatures.

Compact and flexible: Fiber probes can be extremely small and routed through confined spaces. Simplified demodulation: Intensity-based detection allows relatively simple signal processing compared to interferometric methods.

Applications

These sensors are widely used in: Industrial automation: Detecting object presence, position, or surface morphology. Pressure measurement: MEMS-based designs for oil logging, aerospace, and pharmaceutical industries. Harsh or confined environments: Near motors, welders, or explosive atmospheres where electrical sensors are unsuitable.

High-precision displacement detection: Surface profiling and 3D topography reconstruction. Reflective intensity-type fiber optic sensors combine precision, robustness, and flexibility, making them ideal for applications where traditional electrical or mechanical sensors are limited.
