Use a red light pen to test pigtail fiber

A red light pen (Visual Fault Locator) can be used to detect breaks, bends, and connectivity issues in fiber optic pigtails by injecting visible red light into the fiber and observing where the light leaks. What a Red Light Pen DoesA red light pen, also called a Visual Fault Locator (VFL), emits a 650 nm red laser light into the fiber optic cable. The light travels through the fiber and becomes visible at points of breaks, sharp bends, poor splices, or faulty connectors, allowing you to quickly locate faults in pigtail fibers without complex equipment.

How to Use the Red Light Pen

Prepare the Fiber and Pen: Ensure the fiber ends are clean and the pen's battery is charged. Remove any dust or debris from connectors to avoid false readings. Connect the Pen: Insert the pen into the fiber optic connector of the pigtail.

Use the appropriate adapter if the pen does not directly fit the connector type. Select the Mode: Most pens have two modes: Constant Light Mode: Shows continuous light to verify connectivity along the fiber. Flashing Mode: Helps quickly locate fault points by making light leaks more noticeable.

Inspect the Fiber: Observe the fiber along its length. Any red glow escaping from the fiber indicates a fault, such as a break, bend, or splice issue. Document and Repair: Note the location of any faults for repair or replacement.

Pigtail fibers with visible light leaks should be re-terminated or replaced to ensure proper network performance.

Safety and Maintenance

Avoid looking directly into the red laser light to protect your eyes. Remove the battery if the pen will not be used for an extended period to prevent damage. Use the pen in a well-lit area to clearly see the red light escaping from faults.

Applications

Red light pens are ideal for telecommunications, CATV, integrated wiring, and fiber maintenance, especially for short fiber runs, pigtails, and patch cords. They are portable, cost-effective, and allow technicians to quickly identify and troubleshoot fiber issues on-site.
