Huawei Switch Optical Module

Huawei switches require certified optical modules to ensure reliable transmission and service stability.

Certification and Compatibility

Huawei S series switches must use optical or copper modules certified by Huawei. Non-certified modules may cause transmission errors, data bus suspension, or hardware damage, and Huawei will not provide support for issues caused by such modules. Certification for 10GE or lower modules began on July 1, 2013, and for 40GE/100GE modules on January 1, 2016.

Certified modules are labeled with "HUAWEI," and their details can be verified using commands like display transceiver or display version.

Types of Optical Modules

Huawei supports a variety of optical modules to meet different transmission rates and network requirements: SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable): Supports LC fiber connectors, typically for 1G or FE/GE links.eSFP (Enhanced SFP): Monitors voltage, temperature, bias current, transmit and receive optical power. SFP+: High-speed SFP for 10G links. SFP28: Same interface as SFP+, supports 25GE.

XF

P: 10G module, wider and longer than SFP+. QSFP+ / QSFP28: Quad small form-factor pluggable, supports 40GE or 100GE, uses MPO connectors.

CF

P: Centum form-factor pluggable, used for high-speed data communication, 100GE. All modules are hot-swappable, allowing replacement without powering down the switch.

Installation and Replacement Guidelines

When replacing or installing optical modules, follow these best practices: ESD Protection: Wear a grounded wrist strap or gloves to prevent electrostatic damage. Fiber Handling: Unplug fibers before removing modules; avoid excessive force to prevent damage. Module Orientation: If a module does not fit, rotate it and try again.

Dust Protection: Cover unconnected ports with dust plugs. Wavelength and Standard Matching: Ensure the new module matches the old module's center wavelength and standards. Labeling: Record fiber locations and verify labels for accurate reconnection.

Common Issues with Non-Certified ModulesUsing non-certified modules can lead to: Installation failures due to non-standard sizes. Data bus suspension from defective designs. Hardware damage from improper edge connectors.

Incorrect alarms from unnormalized temperature monitoring.

Connector Types

Huawei C

E series switches support two main connector types: LC (Lucent Connectors / Local Connectors)MPO (Multi-fiber Push On) Choosing the correct connector type is essential for proper link operation.

Summary

To ensure reliable network performance, always use Huawei-certified optical modules compatible with your switch model. Verify certification through module labels or switch commands, handle modules with ESD precautions, and match the module type and connector to your network requirements. Non-certified modules can compromise stability and may cause hardware damage.
