Laying and binding the soft optical cable

Proper laying and binding of soft optical cables ensures reliable performance and prevents damage during installation and operation.

Storage and Preparation

Before installation, store optical cable drums upright on their edges and secure them with wedges to prevent movement. For smaller coils (up to 4 mm diameter), lay them on their heads and fasten with shrink wrap to prevent loosening. Indoor cables should be kept in closed, dry areas, while outdoor cables must have waterproofed ends.

Avoid storing drums flat, as this can entangle cable layers and damage the fibers. When lifting, use a shaft through the drum center and a spreader beam to prevent flange damage.

Laying the Cable

Route Survey: Conduct a thorough survey to identify obstacles, plan the path, and select the installation method (pulling or blowing) based on route length and site conditions. Uncoiling: Always uncoil the cable in the direction indicated on the drum to prevent twisting. Avoid forming “S” shapes or sharp bends.

For cold conditions, allow the cable to acclimate to at least 20°C for 24 hours before unwinding. Pulling Techniques: Grip the cable by the outer jacket or strength members, never by the fibers themselves. Use a breakaway pulling eye, automated puller, or pulling tape.

Maintain tension control and avoid exceeding the cable's maximum pulling load. Do not push the cable or spin it off the spool. Bend Radius: Respect the manufacturer's minimum bend radius to prevent fiber breakage.

Loose tube cables are more forgiving but still require careful handling.

Binding and Securing

Use cable ties or Velcro straps to secure the cable along trays, conduits, or walls. Avoid overtightening, which can deform the cable and damage fibers. Color-code and label cables for easy identification and maintenance.

For aerial or outdoor installations, ensure the cable is supported at regular intervals to prevent sagging and mechanical stress.

Final Checks

After laying and binding, perform continuity and optical testing using tools like OTDR, visual fault locators, and power meters to verify signal integrity. Proper handling and binding reduce the risk of microbends, macrobends, and signal loss, ensuring long-term network reliability. By following these steps, soft optical cables can be safely installed, secured, and maintained, providing optimal performance for both indoor and outdoor fiber optic networks.
