Molded Cable Tray Fabrication and Installation

Molded cable trays should be installed following a structured process of inspection, preparation, alignment, support installation, and securing according to manufacturer guidelines and project specifications.

Material Inspection and Preparation

Before installation, all molded cable trays and accessories must be inspected for damage, coating integrity, and compliance with approved material submittals. Any discrepancies should be reported, and only approved, undamaged trays, bends, tees, reducers, covers, and supports should be used. Materials should be stored in a dry, shaded area on a flat surface with timber supports to prevent deformation or corrosion.

Clean trays of dirt, oil, or debris before installation to ensure proper fit and longevity of the system.

Site Preparation

Ensure the installation area is clean, accessible, and free from obstructions. Conduct a safety briefing and toolbox talk for all personnel. Verify that all required tools, lifting equipment, and manpower are available.

Barricade the work area and coordinate with other trades to prevent interference during installation.

Layout and Alignment

Review the approved shop drawings to confirm tray routing, dimensions, and mounting heights. Mark the positions for supports and trays according to the drawings. Ensure proper spacing between trays to allow for cable laying and future maintenance.

Identify each tray section clearly with labels for power and ELV services.

Support Installation

Install supports such as pedestals, hangers, or roof-mounted brackets as per the approved MEP coordination drawings. Ensure supports are level, secure, and capable of bearing the tray load. For roof installations, provide covers for trays exposed to sunlight, secured with clamps or screws.

Tray Installation

Position the molded cable trays on the supports, ensuring alignment and levelness. Connect tray sections using manufacturer-recommended fasteners and accessories. Check that bends, tees, and reducers are properly fitted.

Maintain sufficient gaps between stacked trays for cable installation. During installation, adhere strictly to approved shop drawings and specifications.

Final Inspection and Quality Assurance

After installation, perform a visual and dimensional inspection to verify alignment, secure connections, and compliance with design specifications. Ensure grounding connections are properly made. Document inspections and testing records as part of the QA/QC process.

Any non-conforming trays should be removed and replaced.

Safety Considerations

Follow all HSE safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment, safe lifting practices, and proper handling of trays. Ensure that all operatives are competent and trained for the task, with re-induction or retraining if necessary. By following these steps, molded cable trays can be installed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with project and manufacturer requirements, ensuring a durable and reliable cable management system.
