Testing the quality of optical fibers using a fusion splicer

High-quality fiber splices are achieved by precise fiber preparation, accurate alignment, and verification of splice loss and mechanical integrity using a fusion splicer.

Fiber Preparation

Before splicing, the fiber must be properly prepared: Stripping: Remove the fiber coating using a precision stripper to expose the bare glass without causing nicks or microbends (typically 30–40 mm of coating) and inspect under magnification ≥100x for damage. Cleaning: Use lint-free wipes with 99% isopropyl alcohol or low-residue cleaners to remove contaminants from the bare fiber. Cleaving: Use a precision cleaver to create a flat, perpendicular end face.

The quality of the cleave directly affects splice loss.

Fusion Splicing Process

Alignment: Modern fusion splicers use optical core alignment or Local Injection and Detection (LID) to automatically align fiber cores for minimal loss. Fusion: The splicer applies an electric arc to melt the fiber ends, fusing them into a continuous, low-loss joint. Protection: After splicing, a heat-shrink sleeve is applied to protect the splice from environmental damage and maintain mechanical strength.

Testing Splice Quality

Insertion Loss: Measure the optical power loss across the splice. High-quality single-mode splices typically achieve ≤0. 1 dB, with advanced splicers reaching ≤0.

02 dB. Return Loss: For angled physical contact (APC) splices, return loss should exceed 60 dB to minimize back reflections. Mechanical Integrity: Test the tensile strength of the splice; a good splice retains >95% of the fiber's original strength.

OTD

R Testing: Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry can detect splice loss, reflections, and faults along the fiber, providing a detailed quality assessment.

Best Practices

Maintain a clean workspace and handle fibers carefully to avoid contamination. Use manufacturer-recommended splicer settings and holders for the specific fiber type. Regularly calibrate and maintain the splicer and cleaver to ensure consistent results.

Proper training and practice are essential for achieving low-loss, reliable splices. By following these steps, technicians can ensure that fusion splices are low-loss, mechanically robust, and suitable for high-bandwidth or long-distance fiber optic networks.
