The color of the wires in the distribution box

In a distribution box, wire colors indicate their function: live (hot) wires are usually black, red, or brown, neutral wires are white or blue, and ground wires are green, green with yellow stripes, or bare. Standard Wire Colors by FunctionLive (Hot) Wires: These carry current from the power source to devices. Common colors include black, red, or brown depending on the region and system type.

In three-phase systems, additional colors like blue or gray may be used for other phases in some standards. Neutral Wires: These return current to the source and are typically white or gray in the US (NEC) and blue in IEC-compliant European systems. Ground (Earth) Wires: These provide a safety path for fault currents.

Standard colors are green, green with yellow stripes, or bare copper.

Regional Standards

United States (NEC): Neutral is white or gray, ground is green or bare, and live wires are black, red, or blue for multi-phase circuits. Europe & UK (IEC/BS 7671): Live is brown, neutral is blue, and ground is green/yellow striped. Older installations may have different colors, so verification is necessary.

Canada (CEC): Similar to the US system, with black/red for live, white for neutral, and green for ground.

Safety Considerations

Always test wires before touching, as color alone does not guarantee safety. Label old and new wires when mixing systems to avoid confusion. Large conductors may only come in black and require colored tape to indicate their function.

Understanding these color codes helps ensure safe installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical distribution boxes, reducing the risk of electric shock or wiring errors.
