Lightning protection measures for overhead optical cable lines

Overhead optical cables require systematic grounding, surge protection, and proper design to prevent lightning damage and ensure network reliability.

Grounding Strategies

Suspension wires and aerial cables should be electrically connected and grounded every 2–500 meters, depending on the design and local standards. Grounding can be direct or through surge protection devices (SPDs), which help divert lightning-induced currents safely to the earth.

For OPG

W cables, grounding is implemented at both ends and at intermediate towers, using grounding electrodes and grids to guide lightning currents into the ground. Electrical continuity along the cable is essential to ensure effective current dissipation.

Terminal and Equipment Grounding

After the optical cable enters terminal boxes, distribution frames, or fiber cabinets, these enclosures must be grounded. This allows any lightning current entering the metal layers of the cable to be quickly discharged, protecting the optical fibers. Both intermediate grounding (along the cable route) and terminal grounding (at equipment points) are recommended for comprehensive protection.

Cable Design Considerations

Metallic layers and armoring: Overhead cables often include metal components such as aluminum-clad steel or armored layers, which guide lightning currents along the cable and shield the optical fibers. Insulation and electrical disconnection: At cable joints, moisture-proof layers, armoring, and reinforced cores may be electrically disconnected to prevent induced lightning currents from accumulating in the cable. Suspension wire grounding: Suspension wires act as protective overhead ground wires, and grounding them at regular intervals ensures that lightning currents are safely diverted away from the optical fibers.

Surge Protection Devices (SPDs)SPDs should be installed at critical points, including the main entrance facility, equipment rooms, and along the cable route where lightning-induced surges are likely. These devices divert excess voltage away from sensitive fiber optic components, preventing damage to both the cable and connected network equipment.

Additional Measures

Route planning: Avoid areas with high lightning frequency when designing the cable path. Insulators: In special cases, insulators can isolate the cable from towers to prevent lightning currents from passing through the structure. Regular inspection and maintenance: Periodically check grounding connections, SPDs, and cable integrity to ensure ongoing protection.

By combining systematic grounding, surge protection, armored cable design, and proper maintenance, overhead optical cables can be effectively protected against direct and induced lightning strikes, ensuring network stability and longevity.
