Main switchboard distribution box

A main switchboard distribution box (MDB) is the central hub in an electrical system that receives power from the utility or generator and distributes it safely to sub-distribution boards or circuits throughout a building.

Overview

A main switchboard is a type of switchboard from which the supply to the entire electrical installation can be controlled. It retrieves electrical power from the main source and distributes it to various distribution boards or sub-circuits, ensuring both control and protection of the electrical system. It typically contains key components such as the Service Protection Device, metering, and the main earth-neutral link in certain distribution systems.

Components and Function

Incoming Power Feed: Receives electricity from the utility or generator. Busbars: Conductive bars that distribute power to multiple outgoing circuits. Circuit Protective Devices: Includes main breakers, fuses, or residual-current devices (RCDs) to protect circuits from overload or faults.

Control and Monitoring: May include metering, instruments, and switches to monitor and manage electrical flow.

The MD

B acts as the primary distribution point, sending power to sub-distribution boards (SDBs) or directly to large loads in commercial or industrial settings. Differences from Other Distribution ComponentsDistribution Board (DB): Receives power from the main switchboard and distributes it to smaller circuits within a specific area, such as a floor of a building. It is smaller in scale and typically handles lower current loads.

Distribution Box: A compact, portable enclosure for localized power distribution, often used in temporary setups or smaller areas. It may include outlets, connectors, and basic circuit protection but does not manage large-scale electrical loads like an MDB. Panelboard: Similar to a distribution board, it divides incoming power into branch circuits, often used in residential or light commercial applications.

Applications

Residential: MDBs are less common; smaller consumer units or panelboards are used. Commercial: MDBs distribute power to multiple floors or zones, with SDBs on each floor. Industrial: MDBs handle high-load machinery, production lines, and HVAC systems, often with robust enclosures and advanced monitoring.

Safety and Standards

Main switchboards must comply with standards such as AS/NZS 3000: 2018 and AS/NZS 61439, ensuring safe construction, protection, and operation. They are designed to allow safe isolation of circuits for maintenance and to prevent exposure to live parts. In summary, the main switchboard distribution box is the central control and distribution point in an electrical system, providing protection, monitoring, and organized power distribution to downstream boards and circuits, while distribution boards and boxes serve more localized or specialized roles.

North American distribution boards are generally housed in sheet metal enclosures, with the circuit breakers positioned in two columns operable from the front. Some panelboards are provided with a door covering the breaker switch handles, but all are constructed with a dead front; that is to say the front of the enclosure (whether it has a door or not) prevents the operator of the circuit breakers from contacting live electrical parts within. Busbars carry the current from incoming line (hot) conductors to the breakers
