Storage conditions for optical cables

Optical cables should be stored in a clean, dry, UV-protected environment with controlled temperature and humidity, while maintaining proper bend radius and protective end caps.

Temperature and Humidity Control

Optical cables must be stored in a climate-controlled environment, typically between 10°C and 30°C (50°F to 86°F), to prevent jacket degradation or brittleness from freezing temperatures. Relative humidity should be kept below 60–85%, depending on cable type, to avoid moisture ingress that can cause long-term fiber degradation or hydrogen-induced attenuation. Extreme heat accelerates aging of the cable jacket, while freezing can make the sheath brittle and prone to cracking.

UV and Environmental Protection

Cables should be kept away from direct sunlight and UV exposure, as prolonged radiation can break down polymer components and compromise structural integrity. Storage areas should also be free from chemical spills, open flames, falling objects, and excessive heat. Outdoor-rated cables, although weather-resistant, should still be stored indoors whenever possible to prevent drum damage from environmental variability.

Mechanical Handling and Bend Radius

Cables are sensitive to bending, twisting, crushing, and pulling. The minimum bend radius must always be respected: typically, the static bend radius should be at least 10 times the cable diameter, and the dynamic bend radius during installation should be at least 20 times the cable diameter. Reels should be stored vertically on a level, firm surface, and never on one flange to prevent loosening or damage.

When moving heavy reels, use forklifts or reel movers with proper lifting aids, avoiding direct contact with the cable jacket.

Packaging and End Protection

Cables should remain in their original sealed packaging until installation. If repackaging is necessary, use airtight containers or sealed plastic bags with desiccants to control moisture. Protective end caps must be kept on all cable ends to prevent contamination, which can cause signal loss or back reflection.

Damaged caps should be replaced immediately.

Storage Practices

Store reels off the floor on pallets or shelving to prevent water exposure and contamination. Maintain first-in, first-out inventory rotation to avoid using aged stock. Label each reel with cable type, fiber count, length, manufacturing date, and lot number for traceability.

Inspect the storage area and packaging periodically to ensure integrity and cleanliness. By following these storage conditions, optical cables maintain their mechanical and optical performance, ensuring reliable network operation and reducing the risk of costly failures during installation.
