Relay protection classified according to current technology

Overcurrent Relay: Operates when current exceeds a preset limit. Distance Relay: Operates based on impedance, commonly used in transmission line. In electrical engineering, a protective relay is a relay device designed to trip a circuit breaker when a fault is detected. : 4 The first protective relays were electromagnetic devices, relying on coils operating on moving parts to provide detection of abnormal operating conditions such as. There are various types of Relay Classification in Power System Protection. Normally the actuating quantity is an electrical signal, although sometimes the actuating quantity may be pressure or temperature.

What principle does relay protection operate on

The various protective functions available on a given relay are denoted by standard. For example, a relay including function 51 would be a timed overcurrent protective relay. An overcurrent relay is a type of protective relay which operates when the load current exceeds a pickup value. It is of two types: instantaneous over current (IOC) relay and definite time overcurrent (DTOC) relay.
