Performance Testing of Planar Optical Waveguide Chips

Performance testing of planar optical waveguide chips involves evaluating optical loss, polarization effects, reflectivity, and overall device reliability using advanced measurement techniques and fabrication-aware characterization.

Key Performance Metrics

Insertion Loss (IL) and Return Loss (RL): These are fundamental metrics for planar waveguides.

I

L measures the optical power lost as light propagates through the waveguide, while RL quantifies reflections at interfaces or discontinuities. Low-loss waveguides, such as silicon nitride (Si3N4), can achieve losses below 1 dB/m, enabling high-power and broadband applications. Chalcogenide waveguides, for example, have demonstrated transmission losses around 2.

3 dB/cm at 1550 nm.

Polarization-

Dependent Loss (PDL) and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD): Planar waveguides often exhibit polarization sensitivity. Testing must account for TE/TM mode differences, as these can affect device performance in photonic integrated circuits (PICs),. Spectral Response and Grating Characterization: Waveguide gratings and other passive components are characterized using optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR) or swept-laser interferometry.

These methods allow sub-millimeter resolution along the waveguide, enabling identification of facet reflections, grating peaks, and polarization effects.

Testing Techniques

Optical Frequency-

Domain Reflectometry (OFDR): OFDR provides high-resolution distributed loss analysis and reflectivity mapping along the waveguide. It can measure IL, RL, PDL, PMD, and phase in a single scan, offering detailed insight into waveguide performance. Optical Vector Analysis (OVA): OVA measures the linear transfer function of passive components, capturing all critical parameters efficiently.

This is particularly useful for planar waveguides with high polarization dependency. Reliability and Environmental Testing: Chips undergo thermal cycling, humidity exposure, and mechanical stress tests to ensure long-term stability and robustness. Advanced semiconductor fabrication processes, including PECVD, lithography, and etching, are optimized to support consistent performance.

Material and Fabrication Considerations

Silicon Nitride (Si3N4): Offers low-loss, broadband transparency (400–2350 nm), and compatibility with wafer-scale fabrication. It supports both linear and nonlinear optical functions, enabling complex system-on-chip applications. Chalcogenide Glass: High-index contrast waveguides fabricated via thermal evaporation and plasma etching provide strong confinement and chemical sensing capabilities.

Polymer and Glass Embedded Waveguides: Graded-index polymer and glass waveguides are evaluated for data center optical interconnects. Performance depends on wavelength and fabrication method, with ion diffusion and photo-addressing techniques used for glass and polymer waveguides, respectively.

Summary

Performance testing of planar optical waveguide chips combines high-resolution optical characterization, polarization analysis, and reliability testing. Techniques like OFDR and OVA allow precise measurement of IL, RL, PDL, PMD, and spectral features, while material choice and fabrication quality directly influence performance. Silicon nitride, chalcogenide, and polymer/glass waveguides each offer unique advantages, and testing ensures that devices meet the stringent requirements of modern photonic integrated circuits and optical interconnect systems.
