Bidirectional Fiber Optic Communication Module

A Bidirectional (BiDi) Fiber Optic Communication Module enables simultaneous two-way data transmission over a single optical fiber using different wavelengths, reducing fiber usage and infrastructure costs.

Overview

A Bi

Di module is a compact optical transceiver designed for full-duplex communication over a single fiber strand. Unlike traditional duplex SFPs that require two fibers—one for transmitting (TX) and one for receiving (RX)—BiDi modules consolidate both functions onto a single fiber by using Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology. This allows data to flow in both directions simultaneously, effectively doubling the capacity of the fiber link without additional cabling.

How Bi

Di Modules WorkBiDi modules operate using two different wavelengths: one for transmission and one for reception. For example, a module at point A may transmit at 1310 nm and receive at 1490 nm, while the paired module at point B transmits at 1490 nm and receives at 1310 nm. An internal WDM filter separates the wavelengths, ensuring that the TX and RX signals do not interfere, maintaining data integrity.

This optical-layer design requires matched pairs of BiDi modules for proper operation. Types and SpeedsBiDi modules are available in multiple speed classes and wavelength combinations: 155M BiDi SFP: For legacy SONET/SDH networks1G BiDi SFP: For Gigabit Ethernet deployments10G BiDi SFP+: For high-bandwidth enterprise and metro networks Common wavelength pairs include 1310/1490 nm, 1310/1550 nm, and 1490/1550 nm, with distance ranges from 10 km to 160 km depending on the application.

High-power Bi

Di modules may use FP or DFB lasers with PIN or APD receivers for enhanced performance.

Advantages

Fiber Efficiency: Reduces fiber usage by up to 50%, ideal for fiber-constrained environments. Cost Savings: Lowers material, labor, and trenching costs by eliminating the need for a second fiber. Simplified Deployment: Fewer physical connections reduce potential failure points and streamline network upgrades.

Scalability: Supports modern Ethernet infrastructure while remaining compatible with legacy optical systems. ApplicationsBiDi modules are widely used in: Campus networks and metro rings where fiber availability is limitedData center interconnects to maximize existing fiber capacityIndustrial and telecom networks requiring cost-effective, high-bandwidth links In summary, BiDi fiber optic modules provide a practical, cost-efficient solution for modern networks, enabling high-speed bidirectional communication over a single fiber while reducing infrastructure complexity and expenses.
