Do single-core optical modules need to be paired

Single-core (single-fiber) optical modules transmit and receive data over a single fiber using two wavelengths, and must be paired as AB terminals to function correctly.

Understanding Single-

Core Optical ModulesSingle-core optical modules, often called single-fiber or BiDi (bidirectional) transceivers, use one fiber for both transmitting (TX) and receiving (RX) data. Unlike dual-fiber modules, which use separate fibers for TX and RX, single-core modules rely on two different wavelengths to send and receive signals simultaneously. For example, one module may transmit at 1310nm and receive at 1550nm, while its paired module does the opposite.

Pairing RequirementsAB Terminal Pairing: Single-fiber modules are labeled as A terminal (1310nm/1550nm) and B terminal (1550nm/1310nm). You must connect an A terminal to a B terminal; connecting A to A or B to B will not work. Wavelength Matching: Both modules must support the same wavelengths and signal format to ensure proper communication.

Mode Compatibility: Ensure the modules match the fiber type—single-mode for long distances or multi-mode for short distances.

Installation Steps

Check Compatibility: Verify that both modules are single-fiber BiDi, have matching wavelengths, and are compatible with your network devices. Insert Modules: Carefully insert each module into the corresponding device port (switch, router, or media converter). Hold the module by the sides or metal cage to avoid damage.

Connect Fiber: Use a single-core fiber patch cable to connect the A terminal to the B terminal. Ensure the fiber is clean and free of dust. Verify Link: Power on the devices and check the link status.

Proper pairing should establish a stable connection without signal loss. Label Ends: Clearly label the A and B terminals to avoid confusion in future maintenance. Additional TipsESD Protection: Always wear a grounded wrist strap and work on an ESD-safe surface to prevent damage to the optical modules.

Distance Consideration: Single-mode single-fiber modules are suitable for long-distance links, while multi-mode single-fiber modules are better for short distances. Device Interoperability: Single-fiber modules from different brands can work together if they share the same wavelength, speed, and protocol, but a single-fiber module cannot interoperate with a dual-fiber module. By following these guidelines, you can successfully deploy a single-core optical module pair, ensuring reliable bidirectional communication over a single fiber.
