Principle of Relay Protection Anti-Jump Circuit

An anti-jump (anti-pumping) circuit prevents repeated or unwanted closing of a circuit breaker after it has tripped, ensuring safe and reliable operation of power systems.

Overview of Anti-

Jump Circuits

The anti-jump circuit, also called an anti-pumping relay, is an auxiliary protection mechanism used in circuit breaker systems to prevent multiple closing commands from being executed unintentionally after a trip event. This is critical because repeated closing attempts can damage equipment, create safety hazards, or destabilize the power system.

Working Principle

Relay Contacts Configuration: The anti-pumping relay typically uses normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) contacts. When the circuit breaker is closed, the relay remains in the NO state; when the breaker is open, the relay switches to NC. Closing Operation: When a closing command is issued via the Trip-Normal Close (TNC) switch, the breaker closes if the anti-pumping relay allows it.

The relay ensures that once the breaker has closed, any subsequent continuous closing signals are blocked, preventing repeated energization of the closing coil. Tripping Operation: During a fault, the protective relay detects abnormal conditions (overcurrent, short circuit, or voltage imbalance) and energizes the trip coil. The anti-pumping relay ensures that the breaker remains open until a deliberate reset or manual closing command is issued.

Integration with Protective RelaysProtective relays monitor electrical quantities such as current, voltage, and frequency. When a fault is detected, the relay sends a trip signal to the circuit breaker. The anti-jump circuit works in conjunction with these relays to prevent repeated closing attempts, which could otherwise occur due to mechanical or electrical feedback in the control circuit.

Benefits

Prevents Equipment Damage: Avoids repeated energization of the breaker closing coil, reducing wear and mechanical stress. Enhances Safety: Minimizes the risk of electrical hazards caused by unintended breaker operation. Maintains System Stability: Ensures selective isolation of faults without causing unnecessary outages in other parts of the network.

Practical Implementation

Different manufacturers may implement the anti-pumping function using either relays or high-speed contactors, but the principle remains the same: block repeated closing commands until the breaker is safely reset. This feature is essential in medium and high-voltage systems where rapid or repeated breaker operations could compromise system reliability. In summary, the anti-jump circuit is a critical auxiliary protection feature that works alongside protective relays to ensure that circuit breakers operate safely, reliably, and selectively, preventing repeated closing after a trip and protecting both equipment and personnel.
