Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is a culturally diverse region of Asia, comprising 11 countries located south of China and east of the Indian subcontinent, spanning both mainland and maritime areas.

Geography

Southeast Asia is divided into mainland Southeast Asia and maritime Southeast Asia. Mainland Southeast Asia includes Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and Peninsular Malaysia, while maritime Southeast Asia consists of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia (Borneo), the Philippines, Singapore, and Timor-Leste. The region covers approximately 4.

5 million km², with diverse landscapes including mountains, volcanic islands, and extensive coastlines. It lies near major geological plates, making it prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity, particularly in Indonesia and the Philippines.

Population and Culture

Southeast Asia has a population of about 676 million people, making it the third most populous region in Asia. The region is ethnically and linguistically diverse, with hundreds of languages spoken. Historically, it has been influenced by Indian, Chinese, Muslim, and European colonial cultures, shaping its political, social, and cultural institutions.

Indonesia is the largest and most populous country, while Brunei is the smallest and only absolute monarchy.

Timor-

Leste is the newest and one of the poorest nations in the region.

Climate

The entire region falls within tropical and subtropical zones, experiencing high rainfall and warm temperatures year-round. The Malay Peninsula serves as a bridge between the mainland and the islands, sharing ecological and cultural traits with both regions.

Political Organization

All 11 countries are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which promotes economic, political, and cultural integration.

ASEA

N focuses on regional peace, economic connectivity, and social development through its three pillars: the Political-Security Community, the Economic Community, and the Socio-Cultural Community. The Philippines is the chair of ASEAN for 2026.

Historical Context

Southeast Asia was historically known as the East Indies and has been shaped by trade, colonization, and cultural exchange. Most countries were colonized by European powers and briefly occupied by Japan during World War II. Post-war decolonization led to the establishment of independent states.

The region's history reflects a blend of indigenous traditions and external influences, contributing to its rich cultural diversity. Southeast Asia remains a dynamic region with vibrant economies, rich cultural heritage, and strategic geopolitical importance, bridging South Asia, East Asia, and Oceania.
